Fat Brando: Art parade leads to quirky special performance at Detroit Artists Market

Fat Brando is worth a stop on the CCS/WSU Art Parade route -- which will will begin at the Community Arts Building at Wayne State University on Friday, Sept. 30 at 3 p.m. and will continue on with stops at Detroit Artists Market, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit and the College for Creative Studies.

Most of what you need to know is here. What is nearly indescribable is the Fat Brando performance art piece, a product of the people behind Black Eye Cabaret. We caught a performance by the group at Public Pool this summer and were blown away. It features Chris Butterfield, Andy Gabrysiak and Ryan Standfest.

Be at DAM (4719 Woodward Ave., in Midtown) around 4:45 p.m. to catch the show.

This exhibition, held at the Book Beat Gallery, showcases works on paper by ten artists who are contributors to the comics anthology BLACK EYE No. 1. The exhibition is meant to be a companion to the anthology, and the work presented here reflects a continuation of the sensibility presented in the pages of BLACK EYE, namely a focus on black and absurdist humor that sits uneasily on the border between what is funny and what is not.

The exhibition will have an opening event held on Sunday, June 5th, from 3 to 5pm, during which there will be a discussion concerning BLACK EYE and the nature of black humor, as well as a signing with some of the contributing artists present. A limited edition letterpress print by the artists Onsmith & Nudd will be available for purchase and for signing, along with copies of BLACK EYE.

I met Dan Clowes at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival. He said he would take a photo with me even though I wasn't a cute girl. And I had him sign Eightball #23. I sat in the front row during his slideshow presentation, and he never looked at the audience once until the Q&A. This Vice Magazine review of Clowe's New York presentation seems to be about the same as what went on in Toronto. Very entertaining.

Yikes.

I bought this book by Jim Flora over the weekend at the Livonia Public Library book sale, I had never heard of it but I found it pretty easy as soon as I looked online. When it comes to Jim's childrens books I think people are more interested in The Day the Cow Sneezed and
The Fabulous Fireworks Family, but this is funny too and I havent seen it a million times already. I like that winky sun below and the thick water in the one below that.

Plansponser magazine gets mailed to the HR department at my work every once in a while. I don't know what the articles are about, but EVERYSINGLE one of them is illustrated, the last issue had Gary Taxali and Yuko Shimizu. The art director is SooJin Chun Buzelli.

At $29 an issue I don't think my boss is going to have us subscribe anytime soon, but I enjoy the free samples.

The Johnny Ill Band single got reviewed at Terminal Boredom:

Johnny Ill Band s/t 7"

Detroit rocker Johnny Ill made an appearance on the X! Records 'Shifless Decay' comp, and I think his band has at least one Terrible Two in it. Four songs here with slightly varying styles, "The Doctor" is choppy pop-garage that sticks around a little after it's over, "Makes Them Feel Good" is twangy country-comedy. "Television Personality" is upbeat pop-sike (this one sounds like Jeff Novak if he grew up in Detroit) and "Rocketship" is the three-minute epic anthemic-rocker closer. Not too shabby, there's a certain goofy enjoyability to it that elevates the songs to just slightly better than mediocre. Packaging is top notch, the white inner sleeves are screened on both sides, die cut full-color outer with insert cut to match. He thanks Tom Perkins on the insert, what the hell ever happened to that guy's label?(RK)

This Happened in June but I didn't get my camera developed until yesterday. The first part of the presentation was Gary drawing all over this wall-sized piece of paper. Then the second part was a slideshow lecture where the slides didn't match anything he was saying.

On Friday I have some oldies up at the Biddle Gallery in Wyandotte for their Summer Solstice Block Party. Some postcards and the hot dog parade painting. I was there yesterday for the first time and there's a lot of good stuff. Free beer hotdogs and sushi!
